Do Black Lives Matter in Beverly Hills? Tracing a Protest Near the Feet of the Elite
Team Members: Claire Nelischer, Celia Sanchez Zelaya, Yufan Wang
The thick map charts the path of one of the many protests for racial equality that took place over summer 2020 to raise awareness in the mass shooting of Black people at the hands of the police. The protest took place on June 12, 2020 and was organized by the Black Future Project, one event in a long history of demonstrations demanding racial justice in Los Angeles.
The map traces the movement of the protesters through Beverly Hills, along with news articles about the protest and legislative responses from the City. It includes the available transit stops that are available in the route that protesters took on Santa Monica Boulevard, and data on the demographics within ¼ mile of the stop such as the percentages on employment, minority population, seniors, diversity index and poverty level. By understanding the nearby demographics, we can see how wealth and whiteness are centered in Beverly Hills. In addition, we included public parks and four of the public art installations that are sponsored by the City. This signified the lack of a common space that can be created by the public and not curated art through a city’s commission. We also have pictures from the @blackfutureproject’s instagram posts on what to bring to protests and advertising the event.
