In this 3-week UHI Winter 2023 Methods Workshop, titled “Experimental Sound,” students were offered a new approach to studying urban environments through sound. Through story-mapping, developing a listening practice, taking field recordings, and producing a 2-5 minute experimental podcast, students learned to engage with, analyze, and understand sound as a socio-spatial phenomenon. Students worked in the groups of their ecologies, in which they were welcomed to switch groups when desired, to build on the research and ideas students already began cultivating last quarter. The first class was an introduction to story-mapping with Miro, listening to sound, and doing field recording. For the second class, students and their groups created story-maps using Miro and sound libraries which the instructors and cohort collectively workshoped together. In the second class, students also focused on getting familiar with Soundation, the audio production software the class was using. During the final class students were given time to finalize their projects and present them to the class.
