Impact of Culture Hubs

Author: Christina Monzer

Following Ukraine’s Euromaidan Revolution, a boycott of Russian products and industries resulted in Ukrainians beginning to think about how to become more independent economically, which led to the growth of creative spaces, cultural centers and venues, technology hubs, and an eclectic restaurant industry. This documentary explores the repurposing of urban spaces in Lviv in Western Ukraine and Kyiv in Central Ukraine. It looks at how these cities accommodated art, music and culture, as both cultural and economic activities. Such developments include the reuse of old warehouses, factories and other abandoned spaces for the use in art events, music festivals and conferences. These spaces became temporary and sometimes permanent hubs in the community, often causing the neighborhoods around them to grow and thrive.
