Koreatown has been experiencing rapid gentrifying development in recent years, driven by luxury residential construction. The influx of new residents corresponds to an escalating crisis of houselessness across the city. The contradiction has made Koreatown a space that is increasingly hostile and militarized, which has boiled over into recent battles between residents who advocate for the unhoused, and their opponents. We map new luxury developments in the neighborhood, and the rapidly growing 311 calls residents make to report encampments to uncover the deepening hostility unhoused residents face.
